In spite of their almost sacred status in American medicine, traditional mammograms actually provide little long term benefit.  In fact health authorities now recognize that these studies often miss cancer when it is present and often diagnose it in women who will be harmed more from treatment than the disease.  This recently identified major problem with overdiagnosis and of course overtreatment with its attendant physical and psychological harm should urge caution when considering the newer tomograms or 3-D Mammograms.
